QUITO-NONO-TANDAYAPA: 1 Day

Trip Rating: Easy. Drive northwest until we reach the highest point on this trip (3.000 mts). At this point, we switch to our mountain bikes and start the descend. We'll pass the quaint village of Nono. Watch the vegetation change from páramo to cloud forest to low montane forest as you whiz down the mountain until reaching the small bearding paradise of Tandayapa. Keep one eye on the road and the other toward the sky: there's a good chance to see parrots, hummingbirds, toucans and caciques. Picnic lunch. Afterwards we will let you end the biking tour through desert like areas until we reach the Equatorial Line Monument. Drive back to Quito. Altitudes: 3000-1800m (10000-6000 ft)

PRICE PER PERSON: US$ 45

DESCENDING THE COTOPAXI: 1 day

Trip Rating: Moderate. Drive through páramo landscape to highest point. Enjoy stunning view of 8 different volcanoes. The bike adventure on the world's highest active volcano begins. Bike on dirt roads through volcanic ash and páramo landscape to Inca ruin at 3.700 m Packed lunch while keeping an eye towards the sky - you might see a condor! In the afternoon bike on dirt roads and single track down from Lake Limpiopungo through pine forest. Altitudes: 4500-3200 m. (15000-10600 ft.)

PRICE PER PERSON: US$ 45

OTAVALO: 1 day

Trip Rating: Moderate. Single tracks, dirt and paved roads will lead you on your bike through striking landscape in the area of volcanos Imbabura and Cotacachi. As we approach Otavalo, you will notice an area rich with culture. Indigenous people in local dress come from all over the country to sell their handmade wares. Once we have had time to fill our bags with goods we drive to Cuicocha Lake. Lunch. After a refortifying lunch we bike on dirt roads through quaint Indian villages back to Otavalo. Return on jeep to Quito.

PRICE PER PERSON US$ 45

PAPALLACTA: 1 day

Trip Rating: Moderate. This is an excellent way to see a cross section of Ecuador's ecosystems in one day: the first part of the trip starts high up in the páramo – the Ecuadorian equivalent of the arctic tundra – and ends in low montane cloud forest at the edge of the Amazon basin. Once we reach our first destination, we throw our bikes on the jeep's roof and drive back up the pass to the Papallacta hot springs for a soothing swim in the natural thermal pools. If the day is clear, views of Antisana Volcano will bedazzle. After lunch we drive over the Papallacta pass at 4200m and remount our iron horses for the two thousand meter (over 6000ft.) whiz downward to Tumbaco valley just outside of Quito. Altitudes: 4200-2500 m. (13900-8300 ft.)

PRICE PER PERSON US$ 45

GUAGUA PICHINCHA – LLOA: 1 day

Trip Rating: Challenging. Even the jeep ride to where we start this biking journey is spectacular. Donning our gear near the top of still-active Guagua Pichincha Volcano we descend a steep and technical mountain side which is surely one of the premier downhills in the entire country. On a clear day we can see the sprawling metropolis of Quito, back-dropped by numerous snow-covered volcanoes. Look towards each of the other three compass points and you will be awed by great expanses of páramo, and, if lucky, a soaring condor. We trek to the edge of the crater to peer over the rim and into the heart of this active volcano after which we mount our bikes and race downward to Lloa on an abandoned dirt road. At Lloa we head west into the cloud forest where we enjoy a picnic boxed lunch. By late afternoon we return to Quito by jeep. Altitudes: 4800-2000 m (16000-6700ft)

PRICE PER PERSON US$ 50

ECUADOR EXCURSION: 5 days - 4 nights

TRIP RATING: Moderate

Day 1.- Cotopaxi National Park.- Our five-day biking adventure begins as we drive south to Cotopaxi National Park, two hours from Quito. At the base of Cotopaxi Volcano, we embark on the first leg of our journey: a wild ride downward to the silvery lake of Limpiopungo. Across the paramo landscape you often see wild herds of horses galloping free, as well as dainty clusters of paramo flowers in yellows, pinks and lavenders. Eventually, we pedal through pine-forested lands until reaching the park's guard station, where a llama herd is typically seen. In the afternoon, we drive to Urbina, where we spend the night in a mountain chalet. (B,L)

Day 2.- Chimborazo to Baños.- We head out early for the drive south to volcano Chimborazo, the highest peak in Ecuador at 6310 meters (20,697 ft.) At the base camp we hop on our bikes and begin the downward descent through a magical Andean landscape to the small village of San Juan, nearby Riobamba. Before reaching this point, we'll be served our lunch in a very typical Indian village. In San Juan we load the bikes on the jeep roof and drive to Baños, a small town famous for its hot springs, and spend the night there. (B,L)

Day 3.- Puyo and the Avenue of the Orchids.- We take a pre-breakfast dip in the thermal baths of Baños before pedaling east toward Puyo. You'll notice the dramatic temperature and vegetation changes as we descend into the steamy Amazon basin. Bike along the Avenue of the Orchids to the Amazonian frontier town of Puyo. Lunch. Drive through quichua villages and tropical rainforest to Tena town in the Amazon basin. Overnight in a jungle lodge at the river bank (B,L)

Day 4.- Amazon Basin.- Today our travel is by foot as we explore pristine Amazon rainforest. On this hike, we will see a beautiful waterfall as well as exotic flora and fauna. We stand a good chance of spotting flocks of Amazon parrots, macaws and toucans. We have a 30 km bike ride through the forest back to the lodge. In the afternoon we relax at the lodge, enjoying a swim in a protected bay in the river. (B,L)

Day 5.- Papallacta - Quito.- We begin by driving by jeep up into the Andes (Guacamayos Pass). We cycle to the town of Baeza at the base of the Andes. We enjoy a picnic lunch, and then drive up to the Papallacta thermal baths for a well-earned soak in the toasty hot springs. From the Ave Maria Pass (4200m), we then bike back towards Quito along the Chiche river basin. This is one of the longest downhill rides in the world, about 45 km. The last 12 kilometers will be on the famous railroad line going through five tunnels, one of which is 322 meters long. The spectacular ride takes us speeding through wide stretches of paramo and cloud forest, with the Andean sun illuminating the way. Some days can be chilled by occasional fog, so don't forget your mittens and fleece. In Tumbaco we pile the bikes on the jeep's roof and head back to Quito. (B,L)
